Fatal accident on Hwy 99 near Merced involving wrong-way driver

A man in Merced County tragically passed away after his vehicle collided with the center median while driving the wrong way on Highway 99 early Tuesday morning. The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. when the California Highway Patrol received reports of a driver heading southbound in the northbound lanes of Highway 99 near 16th Street. Additional reports indicated that the driver had crashed into the center median and potentially left the highway. Upon arrival, CHP officers discovered the driver, a 68-year-old man in a 2013 BMW SUV, between the northbound and southbound bridges of Highway 99 over Bear Creek. The SUV was found overturned and partially submerged in the creek. Despite efforts from emergency personnel, the man was found deceased in the driver's seat. The case remains under investigation.
