EMS overturned in serious crash causing lane closures on GB Alford Hwy in Holly Springs, officials say

HOLLY SPRINGS, N.C. (WNCN) — Police are investigating what led to a crash involving a first responding vehicle and another vehicle Sunday morning in Holly Springs, according to Wake County authorities. An alert from the North Carolina Department of Transportation was sent to drivers around 11:20 a.m., notifying them that a crash occurred near the intersection of N.C. Highway 55, also known as GB Alford Hwy, and South Main Street. Numerous callers submitted a tip to CBS 17 that an EMS had overturned on the driver's side after seeing the accident. A crew member at the scene saw multiple fire engines working to make a safe way for the tow truck to move the ambulance vehicle, as well as police officers redirecting traffic. A spokesperson for the Holly Springs Police Department told CBS 17 that police are on scene investigating the crash. They determined that the EMS vehicle was on its way to a medical response call on South Main Street when witnesses said a white Acura MDX collided with the ambulance as it entered the intersection of GB Alford Hwy and South Main Street. "At the time of the collision, the ambulance was not transporting a patient," the spokesperson said. "Emergency personnel responded promptly to the scene to render aid and secure the roadway." According to NCDOT, at least one lane was closed on GB Alford Hwy and South Main Street until just after 1 p.m. Officers said three people were transferred to a nearby hospital for their injuries. The cause of the crash is still under investigation. "The Holly Springs Police Department will continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision and will provide updates as additional details become available," the spokesperson said. Police ask if anyone else has information on their crash investigation to contact the Holly Springs Police Department at 919-557-9111.
