Elderly woman critically injured in hit-and-run crash in Provo
PROVO, Utah (ABC4) — An elderly woman is in critical condition after being hit by a driver who fled the scene of a hit-and-run in Provo on Saturday. According to Provo Police, Metro Dispatch received a call at approximately 3:07 p.m. on Saturday describing a hit and run at the intersection of 500 N. 500 West. The caller reported that as their vehicle was stopping at a red light, a white Volkswagen Passat swerved around their vehicle and clipped it on the rear driver's side before turning eastbound onto 500 N. The caller trailed the vehicle until it came to a stop at a church parking lot in the area of 700 N. 100 W. Once officers arrived at the parking lot, they approached the suspect vehicle. The male driver reportedly did not comply with the officer's commands. When the officer reached into the vehicle in an attempt to take him into custody, the driver sped off. The suspect traveled on 100 W until he collided head-on with a blue Fiat 500 at approximately 400 N. The driver of the Fiat, an elderly woman, reportedly suffered critical injuries as a result of the crash and was transported to Utah Valley Hospital. The suspect fled on foot but was detained by a citizen until officers arrived and placed him into custody. Authorities are investigating the incident as DUI. Roads in the area are closed while Provo's Traffic Accident Investigation Team investigates.
