East Los Angeles police pursuit ends with crash on 5 Freeway off-ramp
A suspect who led police officers on a pursuit through downtown and East Los Angeles on Wednesday morning was pronounced dead at the scene of his crashed vehicle after a police confrontation led to shots being fired. The suspect was wanted on allegations of an unspecified felony when police began a pursuit around 9:48 a.m. in the area of 7th Street and Towne Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.As of 10:10 a.m., circumstances around the incident were unclear, but aerial footage showed a heavily damaged black sedan with what appeared to be bullet holes on the front and rear windshields.A person appeared to stick their hands out of the passenger window as police had their guns drawn. One of the suspects exited the crashed car by crawling out of the passenger-side window. The driver of the vehicle got out, and there was a confrontation with officers, and shots were fired. The suspect went down next to the vehicle. Police say the suspect may have been struck by gunfire, and he was later pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger was transported by paramedics to a hospital for injuries he sustained during the crash. No additional details were immediately made available. The LAPD is conducting a use-of-force investigation.
