Drunk driving crash leaves Belvidere woman critically injured
DEKALB, Ill. (WTVO) – Authorities have cited alcohol impaired driving as the cause of a crash that left a Belvidere woman hospitalized with critical injuries early Sunday morning. The DeKalb County Sheriff's Office reported that at about 9:30 a.m., deputies responded to Glidden Road, south of Mayfield Road, where Melanie Penaran, 20, lost control of her 2007 Chevrolet Trailblazer and went off the road, hitting a ditch and colliding with a tree. She was extricated from the vehicle by DeKalb and Sycamore firefighters, police said, and then taken to Kishwaukee Hospital for the treatment of major injuries. Police said it was upon further investigation that they determined Penaran was driving under the influence of alcohol. She was charged with the offense.
