Drunk driver arrested in accident that killed NY officer: authorities
A 20-year-old man from Hauppage is facing charges after being involved in a fatal crash that resulted in the death of a Nassau County police officer. The man, identified as Matthew Smith, was driving on Route 347 when he ran a red light and collided with a vehicle driven by 42-year-old Patricia Espinosa, who was on her way to work. Unfortunately, Espinosa was pronounced dead at Stony Brook University Hospital. Smith and his passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were also taken to the hospital. Smith was later arrested for driving while intoxicated. The Nassau Police Benevolent Association expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Espinosa, calling it a significant tragedy for the department. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the crash to contact the Major Case Unit at 631-852-6553.
