Driver told to "check the news" before intentionally driving into Shrewsbury police station, investigators report
The individual accused of deliberately crashing his vehicle into the Shrewsbury police station reportedly made concerning statements to others prior to the incident. Robert McCluskey, a 58-year-old resident of Shrewsbury, intentionally drove his BMW SUV into the police department building on Monday. Despite the car going through the lobby and into the dispatch center, fortunately, none of the dispatchers in the area were injured. Court documents revealed that McCluskey expressed intentions of "suicide by cop" to witnesses before the crash, and he apologized for the incident when asked by an officer at the scene. Authorities detected signs of alcohol on his breath during the encounter. McCluskey has since been arrested and faces charges including assault with a dangerous weapon, destruction of property, and reckless operation of a motor vehicle. He is scheduled to be arraigned in court. Shrewsbury Police Chief Kevin Anderson mentioned they had interacted with McCluskey previously, though not since 2019. Investigation into the incident includes reviewing video footage to determine McCluskey's speed prior to the crash. Mental health resources are available for those struggling with various issues, and the National Suicide and Crisis Lifeline can be reached via call or text at 988 for confidential support.
