Driver killed in single‑vehicle crash on East Drive in Austin, police say

AUSTIN (KXAN) – An early morning crash in southeast Austin left one person dead Monday, according to police. Austin police and emergency crews responded around 4:46 a.m. May 18 to a single‑vehicle crash in the 9000 block of East Drive. When first responders arrived, they found the driver with critical injuries and began lifesaving efforts. Despite those attempts, the driver was pronounced dead at the scene by Austin‑Travis County EMS and Austin Fire Department personnel. Police have not yet publicly identified the victim as officials work to notify next of kin. The crash is being investigated as Austin’s 32nd fatal crash of 2026, resulting in 32 deaths so far this year. By comparison, city data shows there were 34 fatal crashes and 38 deaths at this point in 2025. Police said the circumstances leading up to the crash remain under investigation.
