Driver killed in serious I-270 crash near southwest Columbus involving dump truck

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) — A crash between a dump truck and another vehicle resulted in one death and caused Interstate 270 to close near southwest Columbus. According to the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, a driver in a Chevrolet was going west on I-270 near U.S. 61 (Harrisburg Pike) in Jackson Township. A dump truck was going east on the highway when it lost a tire and veered from the lane. The truck crossed the median and hit a cable barrier, dragging it across as it entered the westbound lanes on I-270. The truck hit the Chevrolet and the cable barrier was shoved with the car in the collision. Both vehicles stopped in a ditch. Police, fire personnel, and medics arrived on the scene and pronounced the driver of the Chevrolet dead at 10:44 a.m. The driver of the dump truck went to Grant Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries, per the FCSO. Nearly a quarter of I-270 was shut down in both directions. The eastbound lanes of the highway reopened this afternoon while westbound lanes between U.S. 62 in Grove City beyond Georgesville Road to the I-70 interchange in west Columbus reopened just before 5 p.m. An earlier report on the crash can be seen in the player above. The sheriff's office said cleanup for the westbound lanes began around 1:30 p.m.
