Driver killed in I-5 semi crash near Camp Pendleton

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- An deadly semi crash caused major traffic delays during the Friday morning rush hour on Interstate 5 near Camp Pendleton. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) reports a 44-year-old man was driving a Freightliner Cascadia with a trailer on I-5 south when, for reasons still under investigation, the driver drifted across lanes and crashed into the center median guardrail and overturned. Traffic was still backed up around 8 a.m. on both northbound and southbound lanes of I-5, south of Las Pulgas, after the semi truck overturned onto its side around 4 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP). A Sig Alert was issued for the area. All lanes on north and south I-5, north of the Aliso Creek Rest Area, fully reopened to traffic just before 9 a.m., according to Caltrans. The semi cab had heavy damage and appeared crushed in. A guardrail was also damaged and gravel was scattered across the freeway. California Highway Patrol (CHP) confirmed the semi driver died from his injuries at the hospital. He has not yet been identified. CHP reported at 7:40 a.m. that the number 1, 2 and 3 lanes of both south and north I-5 reopened to traffic, while the number 1 lane remained closed in both directions as a tow truck worked to remove the heavily damaged semi.
