Driver killed, charges pending against man after four-vehicle crash in Harnett County, NCSHP says

BROADWAY, N.C. (WNCN) — A driver died and charges are pending against another man following a crash involving four vehicles on U.S. 421 in Harnett County on Thursday night, officials said. According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, troopers responded around 7:31 p.m. to the crash near McNeill Mill Road (State Road 1228) near Broadway. Investigators said a 2006 Volkswagen traveling south on U.S. 421 approached a 2012 Nissan passenger car that had stopped in the roadway while waiting to turn left onto Sandy Ridge Drive. Troopers said the Volkswagen driver failed to slow down and swerved left of center, striking the Nissan from behind before colliding head-on with a northbound 1995 Toyota pickup truck. Following the initial crash, the pickup truck was rear-ended by a fourth vehicle, identified as a 2011 Hyundai passenger car, according to investigators. Authorities identified the Volkswagen driver as Bryson Clay Dement, who was taken to a nearby hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening. Troopers said charges are pending against Dement for misdemeanor death by vehicle. The driver of the Toyota pickup truck, identified as Zeferino Vazquez Fernandez, died while being transported to WakeMed Hospital in Raleigh, officials said. Troopers said the Nissan driver was not injured but was cited for driving with a revoked license. The Hyundai driver was taken to a hospital in Sanford with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
