Driver killed after BMW crashes into tree in Sorrento Valley

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A 28-year-old man was killed after a high speed crash in the Sorrento Valley area early Saturday morning, authorities said. According to the San Diego Police Department, the crash happened around 5:45 a.m. in the 6500 block of Mira Mesa Boulevard. Police said the man driving a 2009 BMW 3-Series sedan eastbound on the roadway at a high rate of speed when, for reasons still under investigation, the vehicle swerved left onto the center median. Investigators said the BMW then collided with a tree. Emergency responders pronounced the driver dead at the scene. His identity has not been released. Driving under the influence is suspected to be a factor in the fatal crash, though the circumstances leading up to the collision remain under investigation by SDPD's Traffic Division.
