Driver in critical condition after single-vehicle crash closes interstate for over 3 hours

A driver is in critical condition after being involved in a single-vehicle crash overnight that closed Interstate 40 West for 3 1/2 hours in Mcdowell County, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. The Highway Patrol told News 13 on July 7 that troopers and emergency personnel responded to the crash at 8:37 p.m. on July 6 at the 76 mile marker on I-40 West. "A white Ford F-550 truck was traveling West, ran off the road to the left in the median, overcorrected and ran off the road to the right. The vehicle traveled down a slight embankment, struck two large trees and overturned onto the driver’s side," the Highway Patrol said in an email. "The driver was trapped inside the vehicle for an extended period of time. The driver was transported to Mission Hospital in Asheville in critical condition." After being extracted from the vehicle, the driver was transported by Mountain Area Medical Airlift (MAMA) at approximately 11 p.m. to Mission Hospital. The Highway Patrol said the crash remains under investigation and no charges have been filed at this time. The Highway Patrol also said it was not releasing the name of the driver.
