Woman, 21, killed in head-on crash near Kahaluu Beach Park

KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (KHON2) -- Hawaii Island police are investigating a three-car crash near Kahaluu Beach Park that killed a 21-year-old woman. Officials said the head-on crash happened just before 9:30 p.m. on Sunday, July 12, on Alii Drive. The 21-year-old Hilo woman was speeding northbound in a truck and attempted to pass another car in a no-passing zone, police said. That's when she collided with a 20-year-old Holualoa man driving southbound. Police said the man then drove onto the makai shoulder of the roadway, where he struck a parked van. The 21-year-old woman was brought to Kona Community Hospital about an hour later, where she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. Police added that the 20-year-old man and his 25-year-old male passenger were also hospitalized and are in stable condition. Officials said none of the occupants involved in the crash were wearing seat belts. The 20-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death, and an investigation remains ongoing. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash is asked to contact Officer John Harvey at 808-326-4646, ext. 3229.
