Driver identified in fatal Highway 49 crash
(FOX40.COM) — Police have identified a driver who was hospitalized in a head-on crash that killed two Monday evening in Placerville. At about 5:07 p.m., California Highway Patrol officers responded to the scene of a traffic collision on State Route 49 north of Dolomite Drive. They found two vehicles in the aftermath of a "major collision," one of which was on fire. Two people in a Chevrolet S10 were fatally injured and died at the scene, CHP said in a news release. Their injuries are being withheld by police "pending positive identification and notification of next of kin." Webb sustained major injuries, police said. He was taken to the Marshall Medical Center for treatment. First responders closed State Route 49 in both directions for about 90 minutes during the response-and-recovery operation. The scene was cleared by 8 p.m. The cause of the collision "remains under active investigation," CHP said Tuesday.
