Driver identified in deadly Northfield single-vehicle crash

NORTHFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - A New Hampshire man was killed in a single-vehicle crash in Northfield on Thursday. The Northwestern District Attorney's Office issued a news release on Monday identifying the driver as 65-year-old Duane Schillemat from Munsonville, New Hampshire. The preliminary investigation revealed that Schillemat was driving a pickup truck, traveling southeast on GulfRoad, when it left the roadway and struck a tree, caught fire and became fully engulfed in flames. First responders arrived at approximately 12:30 p.m. in the area of 585 Gulf Road and found Schillemat to be the only occupant of the truck. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will determine the cause of death. The investigation is being conducted by the Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit assigned to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, along with members of the State Police Crime Scene Services, Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, Fire Marshals Office, and the Northfield Police and Fire Departments.
