Driver dies in Wake County crash after car flips on US 401, troopers say

FUQUAY-VARINA, N.C. (WNCN) -- A Willow Spring man died in a single-car crash in southern Wake County early Friday evening, officials said. The crash was reported just before 7:55 p.m. along U.S. 401/Fayetteville Road near Ransdell Road, less than a mile south of NC Toll 540, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. The driver, who was alone in the car, was heading south on U.S. 401 when he went off the road to the right, a news release from the highway patrol said. The car then hit an embankment and flipped, troopers said. Benjamin McNeely, 32, died at the scene from crash injuries, according to Sgt. Joshua J. Kiser of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol. "Investigation on scene determined speed and reckless driving as contributing factors in the collision," Kiser said in the news release. The crash is still under investigation by the highway patrol.
