According to Oak Park police, the incident unfolded just before 9 a.m. near the intersection of North Harlem Avenue and Lake Street. Officers said a driver, identified as 48-year-old Thomas Cremeens, was heading south along Harlem at a high speed and allegedly ran a red light at Lake Street. A pedestrian in the walkway caused Cremeens to swerve into the northbound lanes and crash into four vehicles and a Pace bus, police said. Following the crash, officers said Cremeens pulled out a gun, shot himself in the head and died by suicide. The firearm was found on the floorboard of his vehicle. Officers said in total, 14 people were injured in the crash, though none are believed to have sustained significant injuries. The roadway was closed for several hours while authorities investigated. It reopened at 2 p.m. The National Suicide Hotline is 988. In the Chicago area, NAMI Chicago has several resources for those struggling. The City of Chicago has active crisis services, too.
