Driver dies after Friday crash in southeast Kansas

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) -- A man has died after a crash Friday in southeast Kansas. The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office said the 911 dispatch center was notified around 3:30 p.m. of a crash on U.S. Highway 169, just outside of Cherryvale. Deputies, along with troopers from the Kansas Highway Patrol and other emergency personnel, responded to the scene. When they arrived, they found a 2017 Buick Enclave and a 2013 Ford Expedition that had collided on the highway at County Road 4800, southwest of the city. The driver of the Enclave, identified as Hurshel Miller of Independence, and his passenger were airlifted to a trauma center in critical condition. Miller has since died from his injuries. The driver of the Expedition, an Elmore, Oklahoma woman, and her three juvenile passengers were transported to a local hospital with minor injuries. The investigation showed that Miller was heading west on 4800 and had stopped at the stop sign. As he entered the highway, he was struck by the northbound Expedition. "We want to extend our thoughts and prayers to the Miller family," said Sheriff Ron Wade. "It is never easy to lose a loved one, especially so suddenly in a motor vehicle accident. We also ask the public to keep both the Miller and Smith families in their thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.” The crash remains under investigation, according to the sheriff's office.
