Driver dies after crash on West Jefferson

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) A woman died after a crash on West Jefferson just west of downtown Fort Wayne that created a traffic mess Thursday morning. An alert was sent out just before 9 a.m. asking motorists to avoid Jefferson between Main and Swinney Park. The head-on collision involved two cars shortly before 8:30 a.m. A Fort Wayne police officer at the scene confirmed the woman was driving westbound when, for an unknown reason, her white car veered left of center, hitting a black car coming from the other direction. The driver of the black car was trapped, but she was rescued with minor injuries, according to the FWPD. The other woman was taken to the hospital in life-threatening condition. Shortly afterward, police confirmed she died. The Allen County Coroner's Office will release her identity at a later time. That portion of West Jefferson was temporarily shut down for the investigation but reopened within a few hours.
