Driver dead in fiery single-car crash on US-64 near Zebulon: NCSHP
ZEBULON, N.C. (WNCN) — One person is dead after their vehicle caught fire in a single-car crash on U.S. Highway 64 in Wake County Monday afternoon, the North Carolina Highway Patrol said. According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, the vehicle caught fire just after 2 p.m. on the west side of U.S. 64 near U.S. 264 and Zebulon at mile marker 435. An investigation determined the vehicle went off the road to the left, then went off the road to the right and hit several trees, causing it to go on fire, according to NCSHP. Witnesses attempted to help, according to the NCSHP, but could not get the door open. The driver was pronounced dead, according to NCSHP. Troopers said the driver has not been identified as of Monday afternoon because the vehicle did not belong to them. The NCSHP does not believe the vehicle was stolen. As of Monday afternoon, it has not been reported missing. The vehicle fire closed U.S. 64 West at Exit 435 to N.C. Highway 96 and Arendell Avenue. Traffic cameras also showed backups on Interstate 87 at Shepard School Road and Old Bunn Road. At 4:40 p.m., more than two hours after the crash, NCDOT said the road had reopened.
