Driver dead, 9 children hospitalized after tire blowout causes crash on Interstate 29

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- One adult is dead, and nine children were taken to a hospital Saturday morning after a crash on Interstate 29 north of the Kansas City metro. According to crash reports from the Missouri State Highway Patrol, at about 10:40 a.m., a 2004 Ford Expedition carrying two adults and nine children, 16 years and younger, was driving southbound on I-29 in Buchanan County when the rear driver's side tire blew out. The driver of the Ford, a 34-year-old man from St. Joseph, lost control of the vehicle before driving off the roadway and overturning multiple times. The Ford then came to a rest on its top. The man was pronounced dead at the scene, and several of the children, including another adult, were injured in the crash. According to the MSHP, nine children were taken to a hospital; however, seven were reported to have injuries ranging from serious to minor. A 16-year-old, a 14-year-old, and a 13-year-old girl reportedly suffered serious injuries, and a 2-year-old boy suffered moderate injuries. Four other passengers, a 3-year-old girl, an 8-year-old girl, a 10-year-old boy, and a 36-year-old woman, suffered minor injuries. Additionally, two infant girls were in the car at the time of the crash. The MSHP reported they were uninjured. The name of the man who died has not been released. Additionally, law enforcement has not released the conditions of the children who were hospitalized.
