Driver arrested after trooper chase ends in a crash with children in the vehicle
Arkansas State Police are speaking out after a recent pursuit involving four young children sparked outrage and renewed concerns about the dangers of fleeing from law enforcement with kids inside a vehicle.ASP Col. Mike Hagar said the pursuit ended with four young children injured, and one of those kids was ejected after their vehicle crashed.According to investigators, on May 24, a trooper tried to stop a car for a traffic violation in Camden, Arkansas.Police say the driver, 28-year-old Tyrice Fletcher of El Dorado, refused to stop and put four kids in harm's way."It's disgusting behavior for someone to put their own children in such a dangerous situation," Hagar said. Police recorded the SUV reaching speeds of more than 100 miles per hour. It passed multiple vehicles and swerved into oncoming traffic as the chase continued through Ouachita County. The trooper vehicle video shows troopers tried to stop the car twice using pit maneuvers, but were unsuccessful.Hager said when suspects have kids in their vehicle, they should be punished accordingly. ASP has pit maneuvered cars in the past, with kids inside, and according to Hager, troopers should not be punished when they pit maneuver a car with a child inside. "No. Punished for what? They don't know that there's a child in the car. Again, I've said it so many times we have got to get out of this mindset of focusing on the ibuprofen and start looking at the headache. We've got a real problem right now with people fleeing from law enforcement," Hager said. The pursuit ended when investigators say Fletcher lost control in a curve, left the roadway, hit a light pole and overturned. That's when troopers said they discovered the children inside the vehicle. All four were taken to Ouachita County Medical Center and treated for minor injuries. "Man, there needs to be conversation taking place at home, in our places of worship, in the community, to where this behavior is absolutely condemned," Hager said.
