Driver arrested after leaving fatal motorcycle crash in Zephyrhills, troopers say

Troopers have arrested a man accused of leaving the scene of a fatal motorcycle crash in Zephyrhills over the weekend.Jaykumar Chaturbhai Patel, 70, was arrested at his Wesley Chapel home hours after the crash Saturday night that killed a motorcyclist and seriously injured his passenger, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.Patel was driving a Honda CRV north on Handcart Road about 11:15 p.m. when he tried to turn left onto Old Bridge Road and entered the path of a 31-year-old Zephyrhills man riding north on a Yamaha motorcycle, troopers said. The motorcyclist crashed into the Honda and both he and a 32-year-old Zephyrhills woman riding with him were thrown from the motorcycle. They were taken to a hospital, where the motorcyclist died from his injuries.The Highway Patrol did not release their names. Patel did not stop and went home, where troopers arrested him on charges of leaving the scene of a crash involving death, serious injury and property damage. He was booked into the Pasco County Jail. Information about Patel’s custody status and bond were not available Monday.
