Driver accused of DUI charged in fatal collision on Lowell Connector

A tragic car crash occurred in Lowell, Massachusetts early on Wednesday morning when a driver going the wrong way collided with another car, resulting in the death of the other driver, as explained by police. The wrong-way driver, identified as 29-year-old Derek Witzenman from Woburn, was found to be intoxicated at the time of the incident. State Police reported that the collision took place on the Lowell Connector around 1 a.m. State Police spokesperson Tim McGuirk expressed condolences to the victim's family and loved ones, without disclosing the driver's identity or the condition of the passenger in the car. Eyewitness Eric Courtemanche recounted the harrowing event, stating that he narrowly avoided the wrong-way driver before the crash occurred. The investigation led to the closure of all inbound lanes on the connector for about three hours. Witzenman is set to appear in Lowell District Court, facing various charges including driving under the influence of alcohol and negligent operation. Lowell is situated about 31 miles north of Boston.
