Driver accused in deadly Provo car-pedestrian collision
A man from Pleasant Grove named Jason Wayne Phillips has been accused of causing the death of an 80-year-old pedestrian in Provo. The incident occurred when Mario Valer, the victim, was crossing the road and was hit by Phillips' truck, resulting in fatal injuries. Phillips has been charged with negligently operating a vehicle resulting in death. Allegedly, Phillips stated that Valer stepped into the street from his right, but video evidence indicates that Valer was crossing from the other side. The charges also mention suspicions of Phillips being under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident, despite his claims of not drinking before driving. Testing showed a blood-alcohol level of .09%, with further results pending.
