Distracted driving causes fatal San Mateo collision, CHP investigation finds
A fatal accident on Tuesday afternoon on the San Mateo Bridge was determined by the California Highway Patrol to have resulted from distracted driving. According to CHP, the crash, which tragically resulted in one fatality and another person sustaining serious injuries, occurred when the driver of a Ford van was distracted by his cell phone and diverted his attention from the road. Investigators found that a Kia sedan had stalled in the middle lane of the bridge, leading to a collision with the Ford van around 2:50 p.m. Despite efforts to prevent the crash, the driver of the van could not avoid hitting the stalled Kia once his attention returned to the road. Tragically, the driver of the Kia was declared dead at the scene, while a passenger in the van, which displayed Rooter Hero plumbing branding, was hospitalized with serious injuries. All three westbound lanes on the San Mateo Bridge remained closed until around 7:45 p.m. that Tuesday night.
