Details emerge in Big Bear DUI crash that killed two beloved volunteers

A San Bernardino County mountain community is mourning the tragic deaths of two women, volunteers delivering food to those in need, who were killed by a suspected DUI driver in a violent crash that left a third woman in critical condition earlier this week. Investigators with the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said the fatal May 4 crash occurred just before 10:30 a.m. when Matthew Clark, 52, an Oxnard resident, was driving southbound on Cienega Road and failed to stop at a posted stop sign as he approached Big Bear Boulevard in Big Bear Lake. Behind the wheel of a Ford Super Duty pickup truck, Clark slammed into the passenger side of the victims’ vehicle, a Subaru Crosstrek traveling westbound on Big Bear Boulevard. Kelly Satterfield was driving the Subaru. Her mother, Kathy Greenwood, was in the back seat, and a family friend identified only as Sandy was in the passenger seat when they were broadsided by the pickup truck. Sandy died at the scene. Greenwood, in her 80s, was airlifted to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, where she later succumbed to her injuries. Satterfield was airlifted to Loma Linda University Medical Center, where she remains in critical but stable condition. At the time of the deadly crash, Satterfield and Greenwood were training Sandy to take over their Meals on Wheels route. Kathy’s son, Scott Greenwood, told KTLA’s Shelby Nelson that he was notified of the unimaginable tragedy by a friend of his mother. “I immediately called both my sister and my mother and neither one of them answered,” Scott explained. “That never happens, so I knew something was wrong.” It fell on him to tell his sister that their mother and family friend did not survive the crash. “Her first words when we told her that Mom and her friend had passed away were, ‘Why them and not me?'” Scott said. While Kelly has a long road to recovery, Scott and his wife, Adrena, are remembering Kathy for her selflessness. She was an active woman who adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and a Big Bear resident for more than 30 years who delivered food to those in need for at least a decade. While Sandy’s family is too devastated at the moment to speak, a man dropping off flowers at the scene of the crash spoke to KTLA about her. “She was a beautiful person, a member of this community who did a lot of philanthropy and Meals on Wheels,” the man said. The Greenwood family hopes Kathy’s legacy will live on in the community and that people will continue to volunteer and donate to Meals on Wheels. In the meantime, a GoFundMe has been organized to help cover the cost of Kelly’s medical bills, daily care and rehabilitation. The Greenwoods are also hoping justice is served after Clark, who suffered minor injuries in the crash, posted $250,000 bail and was released a day later. “His selfish decision was the ultimate consequence for two families,” Scott said. While Clark was initially arrested on suspicion of DUI, the San Bernardino County District Attorney’s Office said it is still waiting on additional information and evidence before potential charges are filed.
