Deadly train accident in southern Mexico kills 13 and injures many
A train accident in southern Mexico has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 individuals and injuries to numerous others, leading to a suspension of rail traffic along a key route connecting the Pacific Ocean with the Gulf of Mexico. The incident occurred when the Interoceanic Train derailed near the town of Nizanda as it was moving between Oaxaca and Veracruz states. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed her condolences and announced that 98 individuals were injured, with five of them in critical condition. Government officials are on site to provide assistance to those affected, including family members of the victims. The Interoceanic Train, initiated in 2023, symbolizes an effort to enhance railway transportation in southern Mexico and improve infrastructure in the Tehuantepec isthmus area, with plans to transform it into a vital trade corridor linking the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
