Deadly Accident on Highway 299 with Livestock Truck in Alturas, Modoc County
On Saturday morning in Alturas, a tragic accident involving a cattle truck and an SUV led to the closure of both directions of Highway 299 near the Auction Yard, according to authorities. The collision occurred at around 9:27 a.m., with reports indicating that both vehicles were obstructing the road. Emergency responders, including fire and medical crews dispatched by the Modoc County Sheriff’s Office, swiftly arrived at the scene. By 9:43 a.m., it was confirmed that the eastbound lane was blocked, and the California Highway Patrol (CHP) units later announced the complete closure of the roadway in both directions by 11:00 a.m. A black Ford Expedition was towed from the crash site, and emergency personnel, along with the coroner, were present. The identity of the victim has not yet been disclosed. State Route 299 remained shut down for an extended period for investigation purposes as crews cleared the wreckage. The authorities are currently looking into the cause of the accident.
