Cyclist, 70, killed in Pacific Coast Highway crash

A 70-year-old cyclist was killed in a collision with a vehicle in Huntington Beach, authorities confirmed to KTLA. In a news release, the Huntington Beach Police Department said the April 27 incident occurred just before noon on Pacific Coast Highway, north of Newland Street. Arriving officers located the victim, who was unconscious, in the roadway. “Huntington Beach Fire Department paramedics were called to the scene, however, he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased,” the release stated. According to investigators, preliminary information indicates the cyclist was traveling southbound on PCH and began merging into traffic to make an eastbound turn onto Newland Street when he collided with a Subaru Impreza also traveling southbound on PCH. The 20-year-old man behind the wheel of the Subaru, a Huntington Beach resident, was not injured. “The driver of the Subaru cooperated with investigators, and impairment does not appear to be a factor,” HBPD officials said. Authorities have not released the identities of the two men involved in the deadly incident. The Huntington Beach Police Department’s Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team has assumed the investigation, which remains ongoing. Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or the events leading up to it is encouraged to contact HBPD Traffic Investigator Steve Flynn at 714-536-5666.
