CSP: Girl thrown from car, killed after car door opens during crash

(HUERFANO COUNTY, Colo.) — A minor girl was killed after being thrown from a car during a crash on northbound I-25 north of Walsenburg on Thursday, April 9. According to the Colorado State Patrol (CSP), around 3:15 p.m. on Thursday, troopers responded to a single-car crash on the interstate about eight miles north of Walsenburg. CSP said a 2024 Jeep Compass was heading north when the driver failed to negotiate a right-hand curve and went off the left side of the road. The driver tried to correct and collided with several road signs. During the crash, the left rear door became damaged and opened, and a minor girl not wearing a seatbelt was thrown from the car. The Jeep continued before coming to a stop in the center median. The girl was pronounced dead on scene. Northbound I-25 was closed until just after 6:30 Thursday evening. The 31-year-old female driver was taken to the hospital along with another minor boy who was a passenger. CSP said the extent of their injuries was unknown.
