Crash triggers closure of Interstate 465 on east side of Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana State Police suspect that an intoxicated driver may be to blame for a crash that triggered the closure of Interstate 465 northbound on the east side of Indianapolis Tuesday night. According to a notification from the Indiana Department of Transportation, I-465 northbound was shut down at mile marker 40.3 sometime before 6:09 p.m. INDOT described the portion of I-465 impacted by the crash as being situated between North Shadeland Avenue and East 56th Street. Per INDOT's notification, the crash was first reported by a Hoosier Helper. Indiana State Police were tasked with investigating the crash. Three of the roadway's four lanes reopened around 6:50 p.m. All lanes of the road were open by 7:19 p.m. The total closure of the interstate was in effect for under an hour. A bridge inspector was also called to the scene during ISP's investigation because an overpass was reportedly struck by one of the drivers involved in the incident. Officials have indicated that the bridge inspector concluded that the overpass has not sustained any structural damage. The inspector reported that the bridge was structurally sound. ISP told FOX59/CBS4 that four or five vehicles were involved in the crash. As of 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night, troopers were still working to determine the extent of the injuries the crash spurred. Investigators also believe intoxication was a factor in the crash. State police did not specify whether or not they arrested anybody during their investigation of the crash.
