Crash that killed MSP trooper occurred minutes after his shift ended

Trooper Kevin Trainor, a 3-year veteran of the Massachusetts State Police, was killed in a crash early Wednesday morning, just minutes after the end of his shift. Trainor, 30, was traveling home from work on Route 1 north when his cruiser was struck just after 2 a.m. by a wrong-way driver who was traveling south in a northbound lane near the Saugus/Lynnfield line, police said.Col. Geoffrey Noble explained that Trainor and other units were assigned to the area for saturation patrols and construction area patrols, with his shift expected to end at 2 a.m.Noble said that the 911 call about the wrong-way driver came in at 2:01 a.m."(Trainor) did what all troopers will do — on duty or off duty — that is, be there to help. And that's what he did," said Noble.Moments later, Trainor's cruiser was hit by the wrong-way SUV. Trainor, who worked out of the Danvers barracks, was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, where he was later pronounced dead. The wrong-way driver, who has not been identified, died at the scene.Trainor, who is survived by his mother, Barbara, fiancée Jessica, and several siblings, began his career as a corrections officer in Essex County and has been with the graduated from the Massachusetts State Police Academy in 2023."We lost a hero today," Gov. Maura Healey said about Trainor.
