Crash on Lima Road backs up traffic
FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) - A crash on the city's north side involving four vehicles seriously injured two drivers and caused significant traffic. According to a press release from the Fort Wayne Police Department, FWPD received multiple calls reporting a multi-vehicle crash at the intersection of Washington Center Road and Lima Road. On scene, officers were met with 4 cars involved in the crash, with two drivers trapped in their cars. FWPD freed the trapped individuals and treated a total of four patients; two of whom were taken to a nearby hospital with conditions ranging from serious to life-threatening. Investigation determined that an SUV traveling south on Lima Road experienced a medical emergency and crossed the concrete median, continuing south in the northbound lanes, and proceeded to leave the road at a high rate of speed. The SUV went airborne and struck a stopped car at the light on Washington Center Road, causing a chain reaction of crashes with two other cars. The video below shows the crash's aftermath: Lima Road and Washington Center Road were closed, but have since been reopened. INDOT's TrafficWise Map showed significantly slowed traffic in the area of the crash on Lima Road after the incident. The investigation of the crash is ongoing, and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
