Crash on 295 closes all southbound lanes, sparks DC delays

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- Multiple lanes on Interstate 295 were blocked on Monday morning after a woman was run over by an SUV, police said. D.C. police told DC News Now that officers responded to the crash minutes before 3:30 a.m. on July 13. Once at the scene, police found a pedestrian in the southbound lanes of I-295 at Pennsylvania Avenue. She was pronounced dead at the scene by medics. Her name has not yet been released. Police added that the suspected vehicle fled the scene and was described as a green SUV. As of Monday morning, the crash is blocking all southbound lanes near Benning Road SE. Two northbound lanes were previously closed near Pennsylvania Avenue, but have since reopened. Drivers are urged to follow police direction in this area and find alternative routes until the crash is cleared. Anyone with information about the SUV or crash is asked to call 202-727-9099.
