Crash closes part of I-70 in Hancock County
GREENFIELD, Ind. -- A crash involving a semi closed part of I-70 in Hancock County on Wednesday morning, leading to backups that lasted several hours. According to an alert from the Indiana Department of Transportation citing the Hancock County Sheriff's Office, this happened around 4:40 a.m. on I-70 just east of the Greenfield exit. The left lane was closed on both the eastbound and westbound sides. The alert indicated that a semi had overturned. INDOT cameras showed multiple emergency vehicles on the scene along with slowed traffic. Cameras showed improved traffic flow starting around 7 a.m., although slowdowns were rampant and traffic was backed up. By 9:30 a.m., the eastbound lane had reopened while the westbound lane remained closed. In a social media message, INDOT said the backup on I-70 westbound stretched about seven miles, all the way to State Road 109 (the Knightstown exit). "If you typically take I-70 WB on your morning commute, please allow extra time or seek an alternate route," the message said. An alert indicated the westbound lane reopened around 9:50 a.m. Drivers could still see some slowdowns in the area. The crash remains under investigation.
