Crane operator killed in accident south of COS Airport

(COLORADO SPRINGS) — A crane operator has died following an accident at a construction site south of the Colorado Springs (COS) Airport. CSFD held a press conference at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday and said crews originally responded shortly after 8:36 a.m. on a report of injury to a crane operator at a construction site near Embraer Heights and Bud Breckner Boulevard. When crews arrived, CSFD said they found the crane operator "trapped in the equipment." The crane operator was already deceased upon arrival. Watch the full press conference in the video player above.  "We just want to start by extending our deepest condolences to the crane operator's loved ones, his family, his coworkers who were here," said Ashley Franco, Public Information Officer with CSFD. "This was a really tough day for them." The recovery effort was incredibly complex, CSFD said. The body of the crane operator was recovered at 2:08 p.m. CSFD said the site is under construction for the Forge at Peak Innovation Park. OSHA is on scene and will conduct an investigation into the cause of the accident. The El Paso County Coroner will determine the official cause and manner of death. Rescue crews with the Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) are on the scene of a technical rescue south of the Colorado Springs Airport. According to CSFD, crews responded on Tuesday to a technical rescue near Embraer Heights and Bud Breckner Boulevard, south of the airport. CSFD did not say whether anyone was injured or specify the nature of the rescue. Crews are briefing media at 2:30 p.m., and FOX21 News has a crew on scene.
