Coroner names motorcyclist killed in fiery crash with semi on Illinois Road

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) -- The Allen County Coroner's Office has identified the motorcycle rider who died Thursday after a fiery collision with a semitruck. The man was identified as 69-year-old James David North, a Fort Wayne native. On Thursday afternoon, the motorcycle and semi collided on Illinois Road. The impact caused the semi to go up in flames. A stretch of Illinois between Getz and Thomas roads was closed for hours while crews investigated and cleaned up the scene. The motorcycle rider was pronounced dead at a hospital. The semi driver wasn't injured. Police noted they do not believe either driver had alcohol in their system. The exact cause of the crash has not been revealed, but police did say in the initial investigation that the semi likely pulled out in front of the motorcycle before the rider could slow down. The driver of the semi was said to be cooperating with the ongoing investigation. The Allen County Coroner's Office ruled the manner of death as an accident, and the death represents the 11th traffic fatality in Allen County in 2026. The Fort Wayne Police Department, Allen County Prosecutor's Office and Allen County Coroner's Office are still investigating the crash.
