Coroner: Man dies weeks after distracted driver causes 'preventable' crash along Route 30
Authorities say a Bedford County man has died, weeks after a driver allegedly caused a crash while being distracted by their phone. State police an investigation is underway into the multi-vehicle crash, which involved a tractor, that was reported in Everett Borough nearly three weeks ago. Officials confirmed that an employee for the borough was the victim who sustained injuries in the crash. On Friday, Cambria County coroner Jeff Lees identified the victim as 35-year-old Jarred Bulger, who worked for Everett Borough. Investigators say on May 18th, Bulger was cutting grass along the side of Lincoln Highway, in West Providence Township, when he was ejected from the tractor. Lees says the tractor was being followed and escorted by a slow-moving borough owned safety truck when the driver of a Pontiac car rear ended the truck. Officials say the truck was then pushed into the tractor, forcing Bulger to fall off. Lees says Bulger was later flown to Conemaugh Hospital where he died on Thursday due to blunt force trauma to the head. “Preliminary and initial reports at the scene indicated that the driver of the Pontiac was distracted by his cell phone. These fatalities and accidents are 100% preventable,” say Lees. Bulger's death comes just as a new law is beginning to be enforced in Pennsylvania --- called Paul Miller's Law --- which bans holding a phone, for any reason, while driving a vehicle. “This law is going to take some getting used to. I think most individuals are guilty of being on their phone, myself included, and they’re going to take some adjustments and take some getting used to. But again, if we can prevent these senseless accidents and fatalities, from occurring, this is what this law is all about.” State police and the district attorney did not provide any additional comment regarding Bulger's death at this time, other than saying that there is still an active investigation. Everett Borough officials said, "he was an integral part of the community, and he will be dearly missed. Please respect the family's privacy at this time." Investigators say that, at this point, there have not been any charges filed in relation to the case but Lees notes that he will be working closely with Bedford County PSP and the Bedford County District Attorney moving forward.
