Coroner identifies victim in last week’s fatal pedestrian vs. car collision

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) -- The name of a Kewanee man who died Friday after being struck by a car on the Murray Baker Bridge has been released. Peoria County Coroner Jamie Harwood said 45-year-old Mark Thompson likely died instantly after being struck by a motor vehicle on the bridge that carries Interstate 74 over the Illinois River. "Autopsy on Thompson demonstrated that he suffered detrimental blunt force trauma injuries that were incompatible with life," the coroner said in a Facebook post. The collision happened at about 5:45 a.m., Friday, April 10, in the westbound lanes of the interstate. Thompson was taken to OSF Healthcare Saint Francis Medical Center, unresponsive, not breathing, and with no pulse. Despite intervention, he was unfortunately pronounced deceased at 7:10 a.m. Friday at the hospital. The coroner said the woman who hit him is a nurse who was headed to work. She got out of her car after the man was hit and began trying to resuscitate him.
