Community remembers Spotsylvania High School seniors killed in crash

BUMPASS, Va. (DC News Now) -- A Northern Virginia community is in mourning after three teenagers, all seniors at Spotsylvania High School, died in a car crash Friday night near Lake Anna. It happened just before midnight Friday along Lewiston Road in Bumpass. Deputies believe speed was a factor in the crash after the car hit a tree. All three boys were pronounced dead at the scene.  The tree is now the site of a growing memorial. The high school seniors were on their first night of spring break, just weeks away from graduating. At the memorial, three names were written in big letters on a cross and on bouquets lying by the tree: Kyle Derby, Antonio Rubsam, and Dylan Stanley. DC News Now spoke with Kyle Derby's family on the phone on Monday. They said they are asking for privacy but are grateful for the community's support. Darlene Grimm, a bus driver for the high school, stopped by the memorial to pay her respects on Monday. She said she knew some of Dylan Stanley's family members, who she described as "beside themselves" as they cope with the loss. Some of their classmates came to the memorial on Monday, telling DC News Now through tears that they're devastated these boys won't get to cross the stage with them at graduation in just a few short months. Friends described them as confident, funny boys who liked to make people laugh. Spotsylvania High School sent a letter home to families this weekend offering students and faculty counseling when they return from spring break on April 6.
