Colorado football player dies in car crash
BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. (KREX) - A 23-year-old University of Colorado Buffaloes football player was killed early Sunday in a single-vehicle crash in Boulder County. Dominiq A. Ponder died after his vehicle went off the road and caught fire on Baseline Road near Newland Court. The Colorado State Patrol responded to the scene at approximately 3 a.m. following reports of the accident. Preliminary investigation details from the state police suggest that speed is suspected as a factor in the fatal incident. Ponder was driving a 2023 Tesla Model three westbound on Baseline Road when the crash occurred. As he navigated a right-hand curve, he lost control of the vehicle, which then crossed over the eastbound lane and struck a guardrail. He continued through the guardrail before hitting an electrical line pole. The vehicle rolled down an embankment and landed on its wheels before catching fire. Ponder, who was the only person in the car, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Colorado State Patrol's Vehicular Crimes Unit is currently leading the investigation into the incident. While the investigation is in its early stages, authorities have stated that speed is a suspected factor in the crash.
