Coach K’s grandson facing felony charges in deadly crash with teen on e-bike in Durham: Police
DURHAM, N.C. (WNCN) — Charges have been upgraded against the grandson of legendary Duke basketball coach Mike Krzyzewski in connection with a crash that killed a teenager on an electric bicycle last month, police said Thursday. According to the Durham Police Department, a 15-year-old riding an electric bicycle died in a crash with a Ford Explorer at the intersection of Cole Mill Road and West Wyndham Lane just before 9 p.m. on April 18. The teenager was later identified as Jack O'Shea, a student at Cardinal Gibbons High School in Raleigh. Police identified the driver as 26-year-old Joseph Batista Savarino. Savarino is the grandson of former Duke Blue Devils men's basketball coach Mike "Coach K" Krzyzewski, who won five NCAA championships with the program from 1980 to 2022. Following the crash, police charged Savarino with driving while impaired, a misdemeanor offense. He was released on a $100,000 secured bond on April 20, according to court records. On Thursday, police said Savarino is now charged with felony death by motor vehicle, involuntary manslaughter, and failure to reduce speed. Police have not said if they have served Savarino with the felony warrants. Savarino does not appear in Durham County jail records as of Thursday afternoon.
