Claiborne County mourns Mayor Joe Brooks after fatal motorcycle crash

CLAIBORNE COUNTY, Tenn. (WATE) — Friends, business owners and public officials across East Tennessee are mourning the loss of Claiborne County Mayor Joe Brooks after authorities say he died in a motorcycle crash Friday night. According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Brooks, 56, was riding a 2014 Harley-Davidson motorcycle northbound on State Route 33 in Union County around 11:05 p.m. Friday. Investigators say he failed to negotiate a curve near the Claiborne County line, left the roadway, struck a guardrail and re-entered the roadway before coming to a final uncontrolled rest. Brooks was wearing a helmet and died from his injuries. The crash remains under investigation. By Saturday, tributes poured in from across East Tennessee as community members reflected on Brooks' years of public service and the personal impact he had on those around him. Leaders from neighboring counties, local law enforcement agencies, emergency management officials, healthcare organizations and community groups shared statements describing Brooks as a dedicated public servant, faithful leader and trusted friend who cared deeply about Claiborne County and the people who call it home. At Rustic River Restaurant and Kayaking, owners Marci Clawson and Joe Heinz said Brooks was much more than a frequent customer. "He supported our company like no other," they said. "He would be here for all our events." The couple said Brooks regularly attended community gatherings, encouraged local businesses and was always willing to lend a helping hand whenever someone needed it. "If I needed anything — a tractor or a truck or whatever — I could call him," Joe Heinz said. "He'd say, 'Hey, what do you need?' That's awesome as our mayor around here." The owners said Brooks' presence was something customers and employees alike came to expect, remembering his welcoming personality and constant smile. "He always had a smile, and he gave me a hug every time I saw him," Clawson said. "His energy was great," Heinz added. As Claiborne County begins to grieve the unexpected loss of its mayor, those who knew Brooks best say they'll remember him not only for his leadership, but for the kindness, encouragement and genuine care he showed to the people around him.
