Charges Against Driver Submitted to DA for Review in Fatal Crash of BCSO Sergeant

The Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office is providing an update following the crash that killed BCSO Sergeant Michael Schlattman back on February 23, 2026. Earlier today, BCSO deputies conducted a briefing with the Rio Rancho Police Department Traffic Investigators.Findings concluded that Schattman had initiated a traffic stop east of the Carnuel exit when a semi-truck traveling westbound on I-40 struck the rear of his marked patrol unit. The impact pushed the vehicle onto Schlattman, causing fatal injuries. The truck driver was identified as Miguel Orlando Perez, who holds a valid Florida Class A commercial driver’s license. Investigators determined that the semi-truck was traveling approximately 64 miles per hour at the time of impact and that no brakes were applied for the collision. Rio Rancho PD further advised that investigators developed probable cause for charges of Careless Driving and Operation of Vehicles on Approach of Moving Authorized Emergency Vehicles. Those findings have been submitted to the Second Judicial District Attorney’s Office for review.BCSO wants to remind every driver to remember the importance of New Mexico’s Move Over Law. Slow down, move over, and give first responders the space they need to do their jobs safely. If you are being stopped by law enforcement, pull over as far to the right as safely possible.
