Chain-reaction crash at Caldwell intersection sends car into gas pump
A chain-reaction crash sent a vehicle off the roadway and into a gas station fuel pump, forcing an evacuation and leaving two people with minor injuries. At approximately 12:53 p.m. Tuesday, the Caldwell Fire Department was dispatched to a reported traffic accident near North Illinois Avenue and Marble Front Road. Firefighters arrived to find a vehicle had entered a nearby gas station parking lot and struck a fuel pump, becoming wedged between the pump and another vehicle. The collision happened after the at-fault driver rear-ended another vehicle on the roadway. The vehicle then left the roadway, possibly due to a vehicle equipment malfunction, before hitting the gas pump. Because fuel leaked throughout the area, the parking lot was evacuated as a safety precaution. Firefighters secured the scene, worked to mitigate the fuel hazard, and ensured the area was safe for customers, employees, and nearby businesses. Two people sustained minor injuries. All occupants were able to safely exit their vehicles and were evaluated by emergency personnel. The scene was turned over to the appropriate agencies for further investigation.
