Cedar Lake man charged with OWI in deadly crash of passenger on I-65

NEWTON COUNTY, Ind. — A Cedar Lake man is accused of being intoxicated behind the wheel in an I-65 crash that killed his passenger. Garrett Markovich, 39, is facing charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated resulting in death, reckless homicide, criminal recklessness resulting in death, operating while intoxicated endangerment, reckless driving and operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Authorities responded to a two-vehicle crash on the southbound lanes of I-65 just after 6:50 p.m. Friday near the 233 mile marker. Police believe that a semi truck was parked on the outside shoulder of I-65 for an unknown reason when a GMC Sierra, driven by Markovich, crashed into the rear driver’s side of the trailer. His passenger, Austin Lee Nichter, 25, of Crown Point, died as a result. Indiana State Police said probable cause was discovered at the scene that Markovich was allegedly intoxicated. He consented to a blood draw at a nearby hospital. The crash remains under investigation.
