Car crashes into Souhegan River in Wilton; Two bystanders assist driver
A vehicle crashed into the Souhegan River in Wilton, just off Route 31 southbound, shortly before 7 a.m. One person was inside the vehicle and did not suffer any significant injuries.The Wilton fire chief says crews are still investigating how the vehicle ended up in the river. He says bystanders were nearby when the crash happened.“We had a couple of passersby citizens who have training, and one was in the vehicle to assess the patient,” Wilton fire Chief Norman Skantze said.Skantze added that the two bystanders both had emergency services training. One was a lieutenant with the New Ipswich Fire Department who happened to be driving by, while the other was an EMT with MedStar.Neither bystander wanted to speak on camera. Skantze said both shared that it is simply their job to help those in need.The vehicle was towed out of the river shortly before 9 a.m. The driver was evaluated by emergency medical services and later released.Skantze added that the Department of Environmental Services has been notified.“We contacted the Department of Environmental Services because the vehicle was in the water. We don't believe there are any fluid leaks or hazardous conditions, but we made the standard notification so they are aware,” Skantze said.Crews are actively clearing the scene on Route 31 South.
