Car crashes into Bristol police cruiser

BRISTOL, R.I. (WPRI) — A Portsmouth man was arrested after he crashed into a Bristol police cruiser Sunday night. Police said the unattended cruiser was parked at the intersection of Metacom Avenue and Franklin Street, which was closed temporarily as firefighters worked to known down a garage fire. The driver who hit the cruiser, identified by police as 34-year-old Travis Trego, kept going until he was stopped by officers in a parking lot down the street. Trego, who nearly hit a 12 News reporter and photographer moments prior to striking the cruiser, was arrested and charged with suspicion of driving under the influence of liquor. Police said witnesses indicated they heard Trego's engine accelerate prior to the crash, and the cruiser sustained significant damage. No injuries were reported and the crash remains under investigation at this time. Court records indicate Trego pleaded not guilty and was released on $1,000 personal recognizance. His next court date is slated for March 20. Download the WPRI 12 and Pinpoint Weather 12 apps to get breaking news and weather alerts. Watch 12 News Now on WPRI.com or with the free WPRI 12+ TV app.
